Title: Collection highlights - Two portraits in the Hocken Library

Abstract: The first in a series on individual items from collections, includes photographs and information about Robert Molyneux, by an unknown artist, and Ruskin on the shores of Coniston Water, by Gavin Chilcott. Gives the provenance of the Molyneux portrait, as an example of 18th Century English portraiture. A brief biography of the subject, a master under cook on the 'Endeavour', provides an historical dimension of the painting. Explores links between this painting and the Chilcott portrait, an example of abstract realism.

The National Portrait Gallery was founded in 1856 to collect the likeness of famous British men and women. Today the collection is the most comprehensive of its kind in the world.

National Portrait Gallery, USA
