Title: Artists of the Hobson album, 1 : Edward Ashworth, 1814-1896
Author: Paul, Janet.

Abstract: Describes an album presented to Mrs Eliza Hobson in 1843 when she and her husband left Auckland after the death of Governor Hobson. Describes the arrival in NZ in 1842 of Ashworth, one of the artists responsible for this album, his employment as a tutor to Mrs Hobson's children, and purchase of land and construction of a house. Includes a description of a trip up the Waikato and to Whangārei, before his return to England via Australia and Hong Kong in 1846.

Abstract: Discusses the first instalment of the Suter Art Gallery exhibition 'The promised land. Art in Nelson from Tasman to today', curated by William McAloon, which deals with art in Nelson up until 1950. Refers to works from early Colonial painters such as William Fox and Charles Heaphy, and considers the regions emergence as a centre for the arts where noted painters Toss Woollaston and Colin McCahon developed their styles.

Title: In pursuit of sublime landscape : round the sounds in the Hāwea

Abstract: Looks at the 1876 excursion by landscape watercolour artists to Preservation and Chalky Inlets, and Dusky Sound. Describes the response to the romantic portrayal of the primal grandeur of the region. Mentions James Cook. Features the work of John Gully and W. M. Hodgkins.

Abstract: Examines the connection between the home in England known as 'The Waimate' and the Waimate Mission settlement. Notes that the former was named by William Samuel Bambridge who was born while his father was school master at Waimate North.
