Abstract: Recalls the destruction by fire of the Māori Church of Rangiātea
at Ōtaki in 1995. Points out that this was the oldest and finest Māori
church, reporting eye witness accounts from the 1840s of building construction
methods. Researches questions concerning Māori building techniques used
for the original church that have arisen during the reconstruction of a replica.
Considers accounts of the construction of other Māori churches in the mid-19th
century, particularly Kaupapa near present-day Gisborne.
